General James B. McPherson (1828-1864) was born and raised in Clyde and graduated first in his class from West Point Academy. He was mortally wounded while leading his Union troops in the battle of Atlanta.
General McPherson's funeral and burial was held in the cemetery opposite the family home. A monument was erected in his honor in 1881 and restored
in 1985.
